The Rhg1 locus is the primary source of resistance to the most economically damaging disease of soybean, caused by soybean cyst nematode (SCN, Heterodera glycines).Marker-assisted selection for the Rhgl locus had become standard in soybean breeding well before discovery of the causative gene(s).We previously found that Rhgl encodes three tightly linked genes, specifying three completely distinct proteins that each contribute to SCN resistance.Equally surprising, resistance is dependent on copy-number variation of a multi-gene, ~30 kb Rhgl segment.
