Graft polymerization of vinyl monomers onto natural polymers such as cellulose and chitosan using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has only recently attracted interests of researchers. This technique could potentially provide new ways to utilize abundant natural polymers. It would enable a wide variety of molecular designs to afford novel types of tailored materials composed of natural and synthetic polymers. In this work, surface modification of silk fibroin was conducted by grafting dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) via ATRP to produce well controlled grafting silk.First, the amino groups and hydroxyl groups on the side chains of the silk fibroin reacted with2-bromoisobutyryl bromide (BriBr) to obtain efficient initiator for ATRP.
