Attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD) is the most prevalent neuro-psychiatric syndrome in children.mostly due to a genetic basis.ADHD is very frequent as well in children with epilepsy, however here, the causes vary.It can result from a co-existent brain dysfunction; it can be due to genetic pre-disposition, and the best example is benign epilepsy of childhood with centro-temporal spikes. In this disorder, the ADHD can be clinically much more significant than the seizures. It can be due to abnormal electrical activity in the rain and the example for this is electrical status epilepticus with slow wave sleep.Emotional difficulties that are associated with the seizures can lead as well to attention deficits, and ADHD can be a side effect of the anti-epileptic medications.Methylphenidate, the most frequent medication used to treat ADHD can sometimes exacerbate seizures and thus, not easily recommended in epileptic children. The ADHD in children with epilepsy can worsen along the course of the disease. The different mechanisms that are in the basis of the inter-relationship between ADHD and epilepsy, and the approach to these children will be discussed.
