Human hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) is a developmental malformation often characterized by gelastic seizures that are refractory to anti-epileptic drugs. The only effective control of gelastic seizures is the surgical treatment.HH is intrinsically epileptogenic, but the mechanisms of seizure genesis operative within this subcortical lesion are unknown.Since 2003, Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) has been developing a multidisciplinary clinical program to evaluate, diagnose, treat, counsel patients and families and study epileptogenic mechanisms with this disorder.
