To develop new antibiotics, evaluation of their therapeutic effect using animal model is essential.Mice have been used for decades, however, the use of mice creates ethical and cost problems.To overcome these problems, altemative animal model is needed.We focused our attention to silkworm larvae, which are low at cost and have no ethical issues.In this report, we performed quantitative measurement of the therapeutic effects of antibiotics using silkworms.Suspensions of S.aureus or C.albicans were injected into the hemolymph of the silkworms.Antibiotics were injected into the hemolymph immediately after injection of the pathogens.After 2 days, the survival rates of silkworms were measured and ED50 values were determined.For oral administration, samples were mixed in food, and fed to the silkworms overnight before injection of the pathogens.Antibiotics used for clinical purposes have therapeutic effects on silkrworms infected with pathogens.The ED50 values obtained from silkworms were consistent with those obtained from mice.
