Prostacyclin (PGI_2) has been used in the treatment of arterial diseases such as atherosclerosis and vasospasm. The rationale is that PGI_2 has anti-platelet, vasodilator and cytotoxic effects. However, the chemical nature of PGI_2 is not stable, and it can be quickly metabolized at physiological pH and room temperature. The half-life of plasma is about 3 minutes, and vasoconstriction activity of PGI_2 will keep the blood pressure continuously decreasing.
