The low-power, linear phase modulator in the figure works with the input signal while the input signal is one-half of the carrier frequency, or less than one half of the frequency. The constant current diode CR_1 and the capacitor C_1 provide a linear ramp voltage at the clock input of the flip-flop IC_1. When the ramp reaches approximately 50% of the supply voltage, the flip-flop changes state. At the same time, the carrier frequency pulses supplied to the NAND gates IC_ (2A) and IC_ (2B) periodically short-circuit the floating capacitor C_1 and dissipate it to 0V. The carrier pulse must be short and forward.
