Dear Editor,rnSelection for flowering time is a major goal of plant breeding efforts to spread cultivars far from their origin.Day-neutral tomato cultivars, which have reduced long-day (LD) and short-day (SD) flowering responses, have spread globally from the center of origin of tomato.Allelic variation of SELF-PRUNING 5G (SP5G),one of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) paralogs, in tomato cultivars contributes to the loss of day-length-sensitive flowering by reducing the LD response (Soyk et al., 2017;Zhang et al.,2018b).Why floral induction in tomato cultivars is insensitive to SDs is still unknown. Here, we report that another FT paralog,FTL1, which was targeted by selection during tomato domestication, determines tomato response to SDs.An allelic variant of FTL1 leading to the loss of SD sensitivity was selected in cultivated tomato upon domestication.
