对节白蜡是我国稀有树种之一,主要分布在湖北大洪山脉的京山、钟祥一带。采挖树桩不能破坏森林,一定要保护森林资源。笔直的树木不是制作盆景的好材料,在深山老林难以挖到理想的树桩,要到农夫经常砍柴的地方,溪边、峡谷、石缝,因为这些地方土质差,阳光不充足,水分缺乏,生长环境恶劣,又加上农夫年年砍柴,使树桩变得古怪、苍老、残缺、裸露,但是它们仍具有较强的生命力,正是我们难求的树桩盆景的好素材。立春前后到清明前后,是对节白蜡树桩采挖的最佳时期。此时树木还在休眠期,刚开始生长,这段时间采挖树桩成活率高。采挖树桩时要全面观察,以保护自然资源不受破坏为原则,同时要看树桩有没有制作盆景的价值,看好后下镐,保护树根不受伤害,挖时多留侧根和须根,截断主根,一般留根的长度是树干直径4～6倍。树桩挖回后进行修剪,粗根一定要保证锯口平,以便日后生根愈合,用黄土和水加上一定比量的生根粉搅拌均匀后,抹在根部伤口处,促使提前生根。用泥土和塑料布把树干锯口包起来保湿,使它提前发芽。
