明清两朝对流通钱币有比较严格的规定。自明朝起对本朝钱币有了“制钱”的专称。《明史·食货志》:“制钱者,国朝钱也”。明朝制钱专指本朝官铸钱币,相对于明前历代钱币,则统称古钱。明朝开国时已有大中通宝五等钱铸行,洪武元年颁行洪武通宝钱制,也为五等制,故明朝制钱包含各等折值国朝年号钱币。
