『刻石书法』的单独提出是近几年的事,其与广义的『碑系书法』涵盖面接近,却又不尽相同,因为它只限于刻石。这里说的『碑系书法』即一般意义的『碑学』,习惯上,人们把『帖学』以外的(简牍、帛书之类也应除外)、以刻铸为主要表现形式的一类书法,统称为『碑学』。而严格讲,『碑学』属于学科名词,并非单一的作品属性分类,因此,将此类作品称为『碑系书法』较为客观。那么,『碑学』则应是研究碑系书法的学科。『刻石书法』乃各历史时期之当时,专意镌刻于石材上的、具有特定实用意义和一定艺术价值的刻石文字。无论是书丹、摹勒或者书家、工匠直接刻石之上
