In recent years, there have been many researches on the modal use of modal verbs based on corpora at home and abroad. Most of the researches in China mainly compare the frequency differences of modal verbs in Chinese EFL corpora and English native speaker corpus, The relevant research abroad also pays attention to the analysis of the factors that affect the use of modal verbs, such as the theme of the text, the genre of the text, and even the writer’s cultural background. In this study, we use the nineteen essays written by Chinese and American college students on the same topic as samples to compare and analyze the similarities and differences between the two countries in the use of modal verbs, so that we can exclude the influence of textual themes on essay writing. At the same time, The sample allows for a better analysis of the differences in modal verb usage between the two groups of students. The results showed that 1) the use rate of modal verbs in Chinese students’ compositions was higher than that of American students, and this difference was statistically significant. 2) The three most used modal verbs in these two groups were Will, Can and should indicate that the theme of the essay has some influence on the use of modal verbs; 3) unlike American students, Chinese students tend to use mainly one of their meanings when using the three modal verbs of will, can and should, and they tend to be more direct Not enough euphemism.
