相传唐太宗李世民作恶梦而致病,夜里常常听见妖魔鬼叫。魏徽进言派大将守卫官门,可以驱邪镇魔。太宗即令开国功臣秦叔宝和尉迟敬德两员大将全副武装,彻夜守护。不过两夜,太宗的病果然好了。后来,他叫画师画了秦叔宝和尉迟敬德的戎装画像,贴在门上称做门神。从此,约定成俗便沿袭了下来。经过历代的演变,门神也不局限于秦叔宝和尉迟敬德的画像了。今天,更多的则贴上“吉庆有余”、“五谷丰登”之类的年画了。
