Many of the latest low-end computers to be listed in the holiday season will continue to use non-Intel processors. From the configuration of new low-end consumer PCs to be launched by Compaq and NEC’s upcoming $1,000 laptop configuration, Intel will continue to face challenges in the low-end PC market. IDC’s new research results also prove this point. . According to sources, Compaq plans to launch five new consumer PCs in January next year, and three of them are expected to cost between $699 and $999. Among all the machines that have already been prepared, only the most expensive model (the industry news estimates it sells for $2,100) will use Intel chips. It is reported that Compaq’s new Presario 2286 will use the Cyrix MII processor, while the two new Presario 5200 series models will be priced below $1,000. The Presario 5200 system is expected to use a 350-MHz or 380-MHz AMD K6-2 processor. Other configurations include 64MB of RAM, 8GB of hard disk, and a “SuperDisk” drive that can read the current floppy disk but has up to 120MB of information storage capacity. At the same time, Packard Bell NEC said the company is also preparing to launch a $999 notebook with an 8-inch dual-scan display that will use National Semiconductor’s Cyrix processor chip.
