For a long time, erythropoietin (EPO) has only been identified as having a unique effect on the hematopoietic system. In recent years, more and more studies have shown that EPO and its receptors also play a role in the non-hematopoietic system, especially in the development of tumors. EPO and its receptors promote the invasion, metastasis and tumor angiogenesis of tumor cells, and hypoxic environment is an important feature of tumor. Hypoxia-inducible factor can also promote the release of EPO. This review summarizes the impact of EPO and its receptors on tumor development and provides a theoretical basis for the clinical use of EPO.
