Since the reform and opening up, the Pearl River Delta economy has enjoyed rapid development. In this rapidly developing area, what is the status quo of the cultural and recreational life of residents residing in many small and medium-sized towns; what are the development trends; how are the two major metropolitan cities of Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Hong Kong, especially those in the Cantonese-speaking areas, influenced by this culture? Whether or not the region has become a “cultural desert” in the eyes of the Chinese people and how to promote the progress of the region by coordinating the cultural construction in this region with the economic development level are increasingly attracting the attention of government departments and researchers. In order to explore the development trend of entertainment culture in this area and to obtain first-hand information, we conducted a survey of some representative cities and towns in the Pearl River Delta since the second half of 1994 with the help of questionnaires, seminars, participation in observation, interview and collection of documents and materials. Residents of the cultural and recreational life were investigated, thus the status of urban and rural residents in this area and entertainment trends have a certain understanding of the development trend.
