保存档案的目的,是为了利用。由于档案数量浩大、种类繁多、形式多样、内容复杂,利用者很难对它们有充分的了解。所以向利用者提供参考服务、解答咨询,就是档案员义不容辞的责任。 为了便于参考咨询工作的进行,就必须考虑:档案工作体系应如何建设;档案部门应具务哪些咨询手段；什么样的检索法最科学，因此应建立怎样的检索系统等。这些都是档案学理论中必须研究解决的重要课题。密执安大学图书馆档案部的参考档案员玛丽·乔·皮尤著文（原文载《美国档案工作者杂志》1982年1期）论证了建立内容标引系统进行主题检索，以补充传统的名称检索法的必要性，并对这种系统应如何组建提出了自己的见解。笔者译介这篇论文，目的是这方面给我国的档案工作者提供参考材料。这篇论文较长，某些论点的表述与我国习惯相距较远。故笔者翻译过程中，在力求保持原貌的基础上对原文作了删节、概括和引申性的修改。尽管如此，文章中尚有一些不为我国档案界所熟知的名词概念，所以笔者又尽量作了简短注解。不当之处，请批评指正。
The purpose of saving the file is to use. Due to the large number of files, the large variety, the various forms and the complicated contents, it is difficult for users to fully understand them. Therefore, to provide users with reference services, consulting, is the bounden duty of archivists. In order to facilitate reference work, we must consider: how to build the file system; what should the archives departments consult; what kind of search method is the most scientific, so what kind of search system should be established. These are the important issues that must be studied and solved in the theory of archives. Mary Archipell, Reference Archivist, Archives Division, University of Michigan Library (Originally in Journal of the American Archivists, 1982, No. 1) demonstrated the construction of a content indexing system for thematic retrieval to complement the traditional The necessity of name search method and put forward my opinion on how to set up such a system. The author translates this paper, the purpose is to provide reference materials for archivists in our country. This essay is long and the statements of certain arguments are far apart from the Chinese custom. Therefore, during the process of translating, I made the abridgement, generalization and extension of the original text on the basis of seeking to maintain the original appearance. In spite of this, there are still some articles in the article that are not well-known to the Chinese archives concept, so I made a brief explanation as far as possible.
