In 2002, Susan Lori Parks won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama with “Strong / Weak”, and his novel and unique experimental dramas became the focus of critics. She is the first black female dramatist in history to have won this award and the leader of African American drama in the new century following Augustus Wilson. Based on Brett’s theory of defamiliarization, this article explores how the distinctive defamiliarization of Parks plays a key role in demonstrating the true living conditions of contemporary American Afro-American communities and prompting audiences to confront their survival Dilemma at the same time to think about ways to get out of this dilemma and outlet.
