巨型推覆构造是大陆地壳或大陆板块中主要的变形构造类型,研究巨型推覆构造已成为大陆动力学前沿研究领域的关键问题之一。70年代中期,大陆反射剖面(COCORP)在美国南阿巴拉契亚山发现了巨型推覆构造以及落基山逆冲断层带发现了大型油田后,国内外构造地质领域出现研究推覆构造的第二次热潮,将推覆构造研究推进到新的研究阶段,取得了许多突破性进展,武当山巨型推覆构造的发现及深入研究就是其中一个很好的实例。
The giant nappe structure is the main type of deformation structure in the continental crust or continental plate.
