毛泽东群众路线既是马克思主义与中国革命和社会主义建设具体实践紧密结合的产物,也是对中国传统文化继承与创新的结晶。在中国传统文化中,早期的民本思想蕴涵着丰富的“群众路线”智慧,集中表现在重民、亲民、信民、贵民、畏民、为民、裕民等多个方面,重点体现了重视民众基层力量、亲近民众情感要求、尊重民众主体意识、维护民众基本利益、体察民众主观意愿、接受民众及时监督等丰富内涵。毛泽东群众路线在充分汲取中国传统文化中“民本”思想的基础上,坚持取其精华,以史为镜,继承与创新相结合,突破了民本思想在阶级立场、情感依附、主体意识、价值取向、利益分配等方面的根本性缺陷,创新了“群众路线”中民本思想的丰富内涵,实现了“质”的飞跃与超越,对中国革命和社会主义建设起到了重要的作用。
