The "Symposium on the Civilizing Course of the Lower Changjiang River Valley" was held in Shanghai in the last ten-day period of July 2002. The main subjects discussed are the date of the Liangzhu culture, the techniques of jade working, the patterns of settlements, the social-economic formation, the civilizing course, and the further study of these problem.s Most attendants believe that the Liangzhu culture goes back to 5300-4000BP, that the extensive spread of its jades was essentially idological diffusion, and that its civilizing course took place on the basis of the full development of its primitive rice farming. In the future, the study should aim at the establishment of a detailed chronological sequence and pay attention to extensive revelation of important sites and to settlement archaeology.
