经查多个版本的《靖州志》及《鹤山集》所载《靖州鹤山书院记》,文尾均缺少撰文时间之落款,独明抄本洪武《靖州志》中所载文尾署有“宝庆二年秋八月戊申临邛魏了翁记”15字,为考证书院落成时间提供了重要证据。清末民初缪荃孙《魏文靖公年谱》以为书院建成于绍定元年,而彭东焕《魏了翁年谱》则认为当在宝庆三年三月之前,但没有更具体的时间。明抄本《靖州志》的这一文献记载能够证明书院建成时间在宝庆二年秋八月,或此前不久,魏了翁到达靖州贬所半年左右书院即已建成。
