This article examines the acute effects of insulin on cardiovascular function and uptake and release of norepinephrine (NA), focusing on the interaction between insulin and NA release and changes unrelated to the antiregulatory response to decreased blood glucose. Insulin has been found to directly increase myocardial contractility and increase heart rate, the latter is not antagonized by autonomic blockers, so that insulin may reduce the negative negative effects of NA on the heart. Insulin stimulates sympathetic nerve activation through the central nervous system, increases NA release, increases plasma NA concentration, and increases arterial blood pressure slightly. After sympathectomy in diabetic patients given insulin
