在西方美术史中被称为现代绘画三杰的是梵高、塞尚和高更,三位艺术大师以梵高的激情,塞尚的造型和高更的色彩尤其被世人称道。其中最具悲剧色彩的梵高曾数次被搬上银幕,塞尚虽具影响,但因其性格孤僻,其艺术生涯并未被西方电影制片人所关注,只因和另一位文学大师左拉的生活有密切关系,才得以在电影《左拉》中作为陪衬出现在电影银幕上,而作为生活与艺术同时都有亮点的高更不被西方电影人关注,这就是关心艺术大师传记片的人们所不能理解的了,虽然他也作为陪衬在有关梵高的一部影片《苦命的梵高》中出现过。
