北疆地区一般认为属海西地槽褶皱带,但据作者等研究,本区现阶段不是海西地槽褶皱带。而是经历了地槽阶段、地台阶段之后转化而成的新型活动区——地洼区。 现今所见的天山、东准噶尔、西准噶尔山系和阿尔泰山,并非海西期地槽所形成的第一代褶皱山脉,而是由于中,新生代的地洼构造活动使后海西期地台活化再升所造成的第二代山脉——地洼断褶山脉。 本区中部(准噶尔盆地)地壳较薄,约38—41公里,一般向四周逐渐加厚,显示盆地下面为幔隆,据资料分析,准噶尔盆地可能有一前寒武纪刚性基底存在,它是构成北疆地壳结构不均一性的主要成分,它对北疆构造的形成,对该盆地的演化,起着重要作用。而与地幔有紧密联系的“壳幔混熔层”的存在和北疆各壳块的相互挤压作用,无疑都是控制北疆地洼区形成演化的重要因素。 本区具有多阶段的生储盖组合。其中以地槽阶段者和地台阶段者有利。中、新生代的构造运动对油气藏的形成起着控制作用。 本区以构造为主的复式油藏最为常见。不论其形成的时代如何,都不同程度地受到地洼构造运动的影响和改造。找油的主要对象对准噶尔盆地来说是白垩系以下的隐伏构造。

This area has a multi-stage reservoir-cap combination. Among them, geostrophins and platform stations are favorable. Meso-Cenozoic tectonic movements played a controlling role in the formation of oil and gas reservoirs. This area is dominated by tectonic-dominated complex reservoirs.
