唐祈的《时间与旗》受到了艾略特以“时间”为思考焦点的名作《四个四重奏》的影响。《时间与旗》借用了艾略特对抽象观念(尤其是“时间”)的一些表现手法;但是与艾略特所立足的基督教时间观有别的是,《时间与旗》反复强调的其实是一种历史决定论和乌托邦意识的结合体,这一点与同时代的很多左翼诗人是一致的。虽然《时间与旗》模仿了艾略特关于“时间”的一些表现手法,但是在唐祈与艾略特的文化“对话”中,他不仅显示出自身的民族认同和历史记忆,更表现出一种与艾略特明显有别的时间观和历史意识,即直线进步的时间观,与乌托邦联姻的历史决定论。唐祈期待着政治变局来解救屈辱、黑暗的历史,这种乐观期待使得他忽略了对诗歌的伦理态度的审思和艺术表现的研磨。
