供石之词,应该是比较晚出的,至少在明清之前查无出处。明代诗人邵宝《松风阁次莫东川韵》中提到:“采苓每带云双屐,供石时添水一瓢。”这里虽然有供石之说,但应该还不是一个固定词语,而是一种动宾结构;至于添水一瓢,大概是指当时还流行以水盆置石,或者是指需清水以养的文石。供石之说,应该与诗人苏东坡有关。苏东坡谪居黄州期间,喜好当地长江边的黄州石(南宋杜绾《云林石谱》有载),作有前、后《怪石供》。其所谓怪石,就是指黄州石,类似雨花石的一种图纹卵石,“其文如人指上螺,精明可爱,虽巧者以意绘画有不能及者”。苏东坡亲手搜采了一些,并用饼食与村童换了一些,以古铜盆盛清水以养,并寄赠庐山好友佛印和尚以及参寥子作供。他有感而发,写下了前、后《怪石供》,
