在人体内,单核——巨噬细胞(M_c-Mφ)与T、B细胞组成参与免疫应答的三大类细胞,在免疫应答的感应阶段、效应阶段和免疫应答的调节中均起着重要的作用.由于近代对麻风免疫学机理研究的兴趣主要集中在机体T、B细胞量和质方面的改变,对麻风M_c-Mφ及其功能的研究似乎未予应有的重视.为了阐明麻风免疫缺陷的本质,第11届国际麻风会议上已提出今后5年麻风免疫优先考虑研究的6个目标之一是“广泛研究麻风病时Mφ的功能,重点研究麻风分枝杆菌(ML)抗原反应过程的机制”.不同类型的麻风中,可能由于Mφ对ML及其产物,以及对激活的淋巴细胞(Lc)产物应答上的差异,造成了Mφ在形态上分化的异形,表现为上皮样细胞、多核巨细胞、组织细胞、泡沫细胞等
