明代徽州进士是一个勤于著述的群体,不过其著作数量之丰富与质量之平庸,形成了鲜明的反差。其思想境界、治学方法和研究理路上可以用空、庸、疏、陋四个字来概括,总体水平在中下等。在徽州进士著述中,专门性著作占三分之一的比重。徽州进士投入了大量精力在基础理论研究上,儒学、史学是其主要的研究方向。遗憾的是,这种研究同样思想空洞、治学粗疏、行文鄙陋。总的看,明代徽州进士偏执于理论而忽视实践,在理论研究上又空谈义理心性而忽视经世致用,是一个在治学、从政上均不够专业的群体。治学、从政的不专业,不是徽州进士的独有现象,而是整个明代官僚士大夫的总体特征。
