A unique refrigerator being developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States can save millions of dollars for the U.S. space program. About 450,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen are needed for each shuttle launch. Researchers believe the chillers they are researching can liquefy these gases with better efficiency than existing chillers and can significantly reduce the cost of liquid hydrogen. Such a refrigerator may not be ready for industrial use until five years later, but the new refrigerator may offer significant industrial savings and new capacity. In addition to liquefied hydrogen, it provides refrigeration for the production of liquid nitrogen, liquid helium for space shuttles and cooled superconducting magnets or as a heat pump above room temperature.
