Continuous exposure of glass to external laser light, due to linear or non-linear absorption of the laser energy, is continuously deposited in the glass and forms a heat accumulation effect in the focal region of the laser causing the glass material in the relevant region to be converted into crystals. By selecting different lasers and glass substrates, it is possible to control the formation of crystals in the glass in two-dimensional or three-dimensional space. The related achievements and recent progress of using laser in inducing nonlinear optical crystals in glass materials both at home and abroad are reviewed. The author’s work in this field is also summarized. Some brief introduction about the theory of laser selective induced crystals is also given.
