The productivity and cost-effectiveness of furnace operation during heat treatment or hot working depend largely on the reliability and life of furnace components and fixtures. Alloy selection of such parts is an important part of the economic optimization of heat treatment operations. Laboratory Data and Use Examples It has been demonstrated that many of the high temperature corrosion resistant alloys originally developed for aeronautical use have proven to be cost effective in thermal processing systems to replace the conventionally used alloys. These aerospace alloys are considerably more expensive than their substitute counterparts, however, and they can increase service life, reduce maintenance costs, reduce downtime, avoid sudden failures and increase load factors, productivity and cycle times, justifying the use of aerospace alloys .
