20世纪三十年代中国京剧艺术大师梅兰芳访问前苏联,将中国戏曲艺术介绍给苏联观众,恰逢20世纪世界最重要的戏剧家之一德国剧作家布莱希特在苏联,他得以亲眼目睹精彩的中国戏曲艺术。布莱希特从梅兰芳的表演中观察到中国戏曲中许多表演手法可以制造间离效果,与自己正在探索的陌生化戏剧理论非常契合。由于布莱希特在西方戏剧中的重要影响,他对中国戏曲的考察和借鉴,特别是对中国戏曲艺术中“陌生化效果”艺术的阐述,随之在西方戏剧批评中产生了影响。
