由于碳酸盐岩层中存在巨大的油田,石油地质工作者早已注意到这类岩石对生油和储油的价值,从而导致了对现代和古代碳酸盐岩进行长期的研究.本世纪五十年代末及六十年代,反映新研究成果的碳酸盐岩分类学,岩石学,碳酸盐岩形成机理的理论,碳酸盐岩岩相古地理等方面的著作相继出现,并在七十年代引入我国.由于这些著作所反映的认识和旧有碳酸盐岩理论有很大差别,在我国地质工作者中被称之谓“碳酸盐岩新理论”.
