For nearly half a century, American scholars have been accustomed to dividing the development of legal education and jurisprudence in the United States into different periods. Despite their differing views, the consensus is divided into the following three stages: The first period started from the end of the War of Independence in the 1880s to the Civil War in the 1860s. During this period, gradual development formed a distinctive legal profession, which produced the first generation of native law scholars in the United States.
