French mining engineers have developed an advanced and effective method of thick seam and irregular seam mining. This method, known as top coal caving, has reached a production of 3,000 tons per day on longwall faces. The basis for such a mining system is the trimming of a 3-m-thick lower coal seam over the entire panel of a long-walled working surface to cause the remaining top coal to partially collapse.
