Spanish-speaking regions with a population of more than 400 million are the key target markets for China Intercontinental Press to carry out its “going out” project. Up to now, China Intercontinental Press has published more than 80 different books in Spanish, and the number will reach up to 90 by the end of the year, thus making it publish the largest number of books in Spanish within China. Moreover, the copyrights of over 40 different books have been exported to Spanish-speaking areas.
“Contemporary Chinese Writers and Works Oversea Promotion (Spanish-speaking regions)” project carried out by China Intercontinental Press was approved by the General Administration of Press and Publication of the People’s Republic of China (GAPP) in May, 2011 and listed in Press and Publication R&D Projects. It was also subsidized by a special fund for cultural industry development provided by the Ministry of Finance. This project aims to integrate domestic and foreign outstanding publishing resources, and systematically promote Contemporary Chinese writers’ literary works to Spanish-speaking areas so as to create a brand of “Featured Contemporary Chinese literature”. Thus, it could strengthen cultural exchanges and mutual understandings between the common people in China and Spanish-speaking area as well as expand the international influence of Chinese culture.
Currently, the project has published four works of contemporary Chinese literature which are also sold on Amazon and other e-book stores. In the second half of 2013 and 2014, a dozen of Chinese contemporary literatures in Spanish version will be published. China Intercontinental Press strives to unite all forces to build a co-publishing platform and export copyrights of Chinese books to Spanish-speaking areas so as to bring more good Chinese books to Spanish-speaking readers.
In addition, according to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation between General Administration of Press and Publication of the People’s Republic of China and National Book Committee of the Republic of Cuba 2011, China and Cuba have co-established “Chinese and Cuban Classics Intertranslation Publishing Project” in which both sides will recommend several books to each other for further translation and publishing. China Intercontinental Press is responsible for the main part of the project. It has already launched Cuban masterpiece Yellow Luggage in 2012, and will publish The Trial of Moncada this year. Cellphone will be published this year by Cuba Art Literature Press. This is the first co-publishing project carried out by both China and Latin America, which plays a significant role in promoting cultural exchanges of both sides and deepening mutual understandings of two peoples.
