Spinal cord ischemia reperfusion injury (SCIRI) model is very important for the study of clinical SCIRI. The SCIRI animal model is designed to simulate as much as possible the pathological features of clinical spinal cord injury. The SCIRI model varies according to the animal and method used. Currently used SCIRI model experimental animals at home and abroad include rabbits, rats and mice. Rats are relatively inexpensive, reproductive, and readily available for making spinal cord reperfusion injury models because of their similar spinal cord blood supply. Any model has its advantages and disadvantages. Reliable and stable animal models are of great importance for studying the mechanism of SCIRI, assessing the effectiveness of interventions and seeking effective treatments. This article briefly reviews the research progress of SCIRI animal models and provides some references for researchers to choose animal models that are most suitable for their research goals.
