Since the Second World War, the spectrum of diseases in Japan has rapidly changed, infectious diseases have been reduced or eliminated, and chronic non-communicable diseases such as cancer, stroke and heart disease have been on the rise. The non-contagious diseases in 1950 accounted for 32.7% of the total deaths and now has risen to around 70%. Cancer is the most common cause of death in Japan in 1980, accounting for 23.9% of the total number of deaths. Although gastric cancer is still the main malignancy, the trend shows that it will be replaced by lung cancer in just a few years. The purpose of this survey was to look at the long-term trend of lung cancer mortality by comparing the differences between sex and urban and rural areas and clarifying the causes of lung cancer in men, in particular. Lung cancer data were taken from Japan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare 1947 ~ 1980
