In recent years, with the rapid development of media culture, the frequency of contemporary college students reading classics declines year by year. Especially, the reading status of science and engineering college students is even more worrying. This research investigates the status quo of the reading of ancient and modern classic classics in key undergraduate colleges, general colleges and technical colleges in China by means of questionnaires, visits and access to information. The study found that although the major universities have adopted a positive strategy to enhance students’ interest in reading classics, but the students of science and engineering to read the famous classics still appears to be dispensable. What is even more serious is that contemporary college students are not aware of the important humanistic value of literary classics. Through the analysis of the current situation of reading, it is suggested that the improvement of reading status quo requires the joint efforts of individuals, schools, government and society, so as to promote the construction of socialist spiritual civilization.
