帖学作为书坛主流历经了上千年的发展,成为一整套完整的书学体系,但到了清代中晚期这种情况有所改变,新兴的碑学逐渐发展壮大,代替帖学成为书坛主流,传统书学观念被彻底打破,帖学在学书者心目中不再具有神圣地位,王羲之,赵孟頫等帖学大家也不再是唯一的圣贤,而是把目光投向了遥远的魏晋时代及秦汉商周,“迄于咸、同,碑学大播,三尺之童,十室之社,莫不口北碑、写魏体,盖俗尚成矣”。在这种时代背景下,一些有识之士,依然坚持自己的帖学道路,以二王书法为依归,并逐渐形成书学团队,对书坛及近代帖学的复兴发挥不可估量的作用,白蕉即是其中具有代表性的一位,虽然他没有沈尹默等人的社会影响力,但他依靠着自己对魏晋书风独到的理解及坚持不懈的追求,最终取得了成功,从帖学发展史的角度来讲,白蕉的意义是非同一般的。
