During the term of his administration, President Sukarno of Indonesia deeply impacted the internal and external policies of Indonesia through his so-called middle way. Despite his consistent image as a leader of the Non-Aligned Movement and a pro-Communist anti-imperialist revolutionary, Sukarno has always regarded the United States as an extremely important target in Indonesia’s foreign relations while maintaining close cooperation with Communists both at home and abroad. With the U.S. government failing to fully meet its political demands, Sukarno began to use its confrontation with the West as its own domestic political bargaining chip and increased its cooperation with the communist world. The resulting trend toward Indonesia’s left-leaning has also changed the political balance between its domestic army and the Communist Party and laid the groundwork for the drastic change after the “September 30 Incident.”
