Objective To explore the application of microwave technology to detect changes in the amount of microwave radiation after mental workload of students to objectively assess the learning fatigue of students. Methods The microwave radiometer developed by Changchun Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences was used to detect the middle part of the forehead of high school, middle school and primary school pupils (ie, the midpoint of the connection between Yintang acupuncture point and hairline) Changes of microwave radiation after mental workload. The word work ability index (AYP) was calculated by school word test to observe whether the change of microwave radiation was consistent with the change of AYP. Results After the students’ exams, after several cultural classes, the mean value of microwave radiation in head decreased gradually after learning mental workload (P <0.01), and the average decrease ranged from 1.8 to 10.3. There was a clear correlation between the fatigue status of students after mental stress and the decrease of microwave radiation. After several sessions of cultural class, the amount of microwave radiation and AYP index showed a consistent downward trend. Although both methods can reflect the changes of students’ mental workload, the coefficient of variation of the school lettering method is obviously larger than that of the microwave method, indicating that the microwave method is more stable than the school lettering method. Conclusion The amount of microwave radiation decreased regularly after the mental workload of the students. Using microwave technology to detect the changes as a method to objectively evaluate the students’ mental fatigue has certain application prospects.
