It is expected that fiber optics will be the media of choice for subscriber networks in the 1990s. In the next 10 years, as the number of these network installations increases, there will be a need for a better method of splicing optical fibers that is effective, inexpensive, and requires less operator skill. During AT & T’s 88-89 study, users made a few explicit demands on an effective splicing system. AT & T’s innovative CSL LightSplice system meets these requirements. The CSL LightSplice system is a mechanical device for the installation and repair of single single-mode or multi-mode fibers.
