The NBCC Canadian Building Code (1995 Edition) was recently updated to 2005 version. It has done a great deal of amendment in earthquake resistance and has explained the rationale. However, both versions do not quantitatively assess the reliability of the structure as specified in the seismic code, nor do they propose a target reliability that can be used to calibrate seismic design effects (if any). Taking the 6 kinds of bending frames designed according to the standard as an example, the reliability evaluation of the structure is carried out. The assessment uses a ductile method to compare the results with the results obtained from the methods used in the U.S. SAC project. The reliability of the two measures is in good agreement. The reliability of the framework based on both versions of NBCC has not changed. The use of a ductile method that can calibrate the seismic design value and obtain the target reliability is illustrated by taking the example of initial damage and collapse. The results show that ductility factor and seismic design level depend on the target reliability considering the initial damage or collapse.
