“中国古典舞”概念的提出源于上世纪80年代初,它作为我国舞蹈的一个类别,是在民族传统舞蹈的基础上,经过提炼、加工和创造,并经过较长时期的艺术实践检验流传下来的,是具有典范意义和独特风格的传统舞蹈,是当代舞蹈家为创造与繁荣民族舞蹈艺术,从蕴藏丰富的中国戏曲表演中发掘和整理出大量的舞蹈步伐、身段、武打和筋斗技巧,参考芭蕾的训练方法做出的新的创造。李正一先生在诠释“古典舞”时这样讲道:“名为古典舞,它并不是古代舞蹈的翻版,它是建立在深厚的传统舞蹈美学基础上,适应现代人欣赏习惯的新古典舞。它是以民族为主体,以戏曲、武术等民族美学原则为基础,吸收借鉴芭蕾等外来艺术的有益部分,使其成为独立的、具有民族性、时代性的舞种和体系。”
