  Mark: Hey Jo...Jo?...Jo…Hello?
  Jo: Oh…sorry…hey, Mark.
Mark: Sorry, did I distract you from yourself?!
Jo: I was just looking at myself in the mirror.
Mark: I know! ①You were away with the fairies.
  Jo: Ha, yeah, sorry again.
  Mark: No worries.
Jo: Surprised you even noticed me.
  Mark: What do you mean?
① You were away with the fairies.
  away with the fairies: daydreaming(做白日梦,瞎想)。例如:
Did you hear what Mum just said? Were you away with the fairies again?
Jo: Well no one else does around here…
Mark: Oh, stop going on, will you? You’re always talking about how you look.
Jo: I just want to be 1)drop-dead 2)gorgeous, is that too much for a girl to ask for?!
Mark: Is that what’s important to you? Getting noticed for how you look?
Jo: I don’t like anything about the way I look right now!
  Mark: Stop 3)moaning!
Jo: It’s easy for you to say, you’re not bad looking at all.
  Mark: Oh, cheers.
Jo: I don’t like the colour of my eyes, I have a big nose, I hate my smile…and, I’m fat!
  Mark: I like your nose.
  Jo: Why?!
Mark: Well, it’s totally unique, I’ve never seen one like yours before!
  Jo: That doesn’t sound good!
  Mark: Trust me, it’s a 4)compliment…kind of!
  Jo: Thanks.
Mark: And you’re definitely not fat!
Jo: I can’t fit into some jeans that I bought just six months ago!
  Mark: Hmmm, you’re healthy.
Jo: That is what my grandmother says when she knows I have put weight on! ②Now I know you’re telling pork pies!
Mark: You should be comfortable with the body you have.
Jo: See, that’s what I mean, I’m not!I want to be perfect! I want to stop people on the street! Life is much easier for those who are pretty.
  Mark: Oh yeah?
  Jo: Yeah. That’s true.
Mark: What kind of benefits are we talking about then?
Jo: They get noticed more by the boys.
Mark: That’s all you care about?!
Jo: Yeah! That would be great!
  Mark: Jo!
Jo: I have a face only a mother could love!
  Mark: You’re being really 5)superficial.
Jo: I’m just being realistic. Seriously though, prettier girls are more likely to get hired.
Mark: If that’s true, then that’s a shame.
Jo: Being pretty would totally change my life. Mark: I think you’d be surprised.
② Now I know you’re telling pork pies!
  pork pie: a lie(谎言)。例如:
  —Your granddaughter is very smart!
—Oh, you are just telling pork pies. She often fails at school.
③ I’d be the life and soul of the party!
the life and soul of the party: sb. is the center or the focus during social occasions(在社交场合的焦点、活跃分子)。例如:
Throughout our college years, Jessie was the life and soul of the party in school, but she also had outstanding academic records.
  ④ Spot on! 正确!
  spot on: exactly, just so(正好,恰到好处)。例如:
—Why is everyone not studying? The exam has been canceled?
  —Spot on.
Jo: More boys would ask me out on dates, my superiors would be nicer to me…③I’d be the life and soul of the party!
Mark: Well, what are you going to do about it? You can’t hide your face!
Jo: No, but I can change it!
Mark: What do you mean? 6)Plastic surgery?!
  Jo: ④Spot on!
Mark: That’s ridiculous! Apart from the risks involved with going under the knife, it’s also really expensive.
Jo: My parents know I want to go into 7)broadcasting, and they know that the more beautiful you are, the more likely you are to score a job.
Mark: If that’s what you believe…
Jo: Just you wait and see. In a year’s time I’ll be the talk of the town.
  Mark: ⑤If you say so!
  Jo: I do say so!
⑤ If you say so!
If you say so: used to express one’s doubt, a polite way of saying no(用以表达自己的怀疑,表达不同意见的礼貌方式)。例如:
—Trust me, the Jones can’t afford the house.
  —If you say so.

Frans de Waal
