从少年时代起,吴之——这位琼纵出身的作家,以及他的作品——长篇小说《破晓之前》、报告特写集《在红色的海南岛上》等,就给我留下难以磨灭的印象。但直至1999年1月,吴之自穗返琼,在琼山市文化馆举办个人摄影作品展,我才第一次与这位少年时代起便敬仰的老作家见面。 1955年,吴之在屯昌县荔枝园一二七师任代理师直工科长,协助师参谋长抓直属部队的政治教育、军事训练和国防工程施工,晚上还要给师机关共产主义夜校讲社会发展史理论课。每遇闲暇,吴之总爱翻翻《中国人民解放军琼崖纵队发展史》,自1939年参加琼纵,11年的战争生活,仿佛还是昨天发生的活生生的一幕幕。他想,除了用史、回忆录的形式表现琼纵和战友外,能否尝试用其他文字形式,如小说之类,来实现自己的愿望呢?是年,吴之在紧张军训中,白天操课不断,深夜写作不辍。1957年初,吴之将十五六万字的长篇小说稿《破晓之前》堆到了文学编辑的办公桌上;同年7月,小说经精心删改至12万字,由广东人民出版社出版。该书形象地描写了在党的领导下,1942年海南琼崖抗日游击队(即琼崖纵队)和人民群众,打破日寇、伪军
