The plan was established in 1985 after a vast explosion of rockburst at several mines in Ontario. Three units took part in the project: the Canadian government, Northern Ontario Development and Mines Department, Ontario Mining Association. The first two years of this project mainly develop, design and install a new seismic monitoring system. The plan intends to install three different types of monitoring systems in four mining areas where rockburst had occurred. Seismological devices will be installed in each mine area for permanent recording of major earthquakes and vibrations. The strong earthquake system is installed around 5 mines (Carnpell, Quirke, Strathcona, Creighton and Macassa). These systems include a three-point, strong seismic detector with a data processing unit that detects and digitizes data. Full waveforms were captured to study the initial peak particle velocity, seismic energy, and spectral frequency. At present, 13 mines in Ontario each operate a strong earthquake system and are all used to locate the source of the event in real time. These test equipment has been installed. This article describes the current research activities carried out on these mines with these devices.
