刘继盛，是湖北阳新建县以来唯一的状元，也是黄石历史上唯一的状元，还是太平天国第一个状元。刘继盛，名达忠，字秉赤，号利川。后改名闼忠，字赞宸。清末湖北武昌府兴国州永章里中南庄（今阳新县大王镇下刘村上刘湾）人。生于清嘉庆己未年（1799）五月初二。
